A flood alert is currently in effect for areas in Fiji that are prone to flooding, particularly those located adjacent to and downstream from the major rivers. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours has varied between 30mm and 47mm in the Northern division.

The Fiji Met has confirmed that water levels in all major rivers are presently below flood alert thresholds. However, there is a flash flood warning issued for low-lying areas that are susceptible to flooding, as well as for small streams in the Northern division.

An active trough of low pressure, accompanied by clouds and rain, is slowly moving over the northeastern parts of Fiji. As a result, heavy rain is expected later today in regions including the Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Northern Division, Northern Lau Group, as well as the western and interior regions of Viti Levu.

This situation calls for vigilance among residents in the affected areas, encouraging them to stay updated with local weather reports and heed any warnings from authorities. While the current water levels are below dangerous thresholds, the potential for heavy rains creates a scenario that requires preparedness.

In light of these weather conditions, it is hopeful that the community will come together to support one another and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. As always, being proactive in emergency preparedness can help mitigate the risks associated with such weather events.
