A flood alert is currently active in flood-prone regions next to and downstream from all major rivers in Fiji. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that rainfall recorded over the last 24 hours, from 5 AM Saturday to 5 AM Sunday, ranged between 30mm and 47mm in the Northern Division.
According to the Fiji Met, water levels in all major rivers are currently below their respective flood alert thresholds. However, a flash flood warning is still in effect for all low-lying areas prone to flash flooding, as well as for small streams in the Northern Division.
An active trough of low pressure, accompanied by clouds and rain, is slowly moving over the northeastern regions of Fiji. As a result of this trough, heavy rainfall is expected later today in the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, parts of the Northern Division, the Northern Lau Group, and the western half and interior of Viti Levu.
It is crucial for residents in these areas to stay informed and take preventive measures to ensure their safety as weather conditions may change. While the current flood levels remain manageable, vigilance is essential in case of any sudden changes.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions. Community awareness and emergency plans can significantly reduce risks associated with flooding events.
In summary, while Fiji faces potential rainfall that could impact various regions, the government’s timely alerts and ongoing monitoring highlight the commitment to public safety. Residents are urged to stay cautious and alert during this period.
