A tropical disturbance known as TD 01F is predicted to bring heavy rainfall to the Fiji Group until tomorrow. The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that TD 01F was positioned approximately 240 kilometers west of Yasawa-i-rara and 270 kilometers west-northwest of Nadi as of noon today. The system is moving southeast at a speed of around 20 kilometers per hour.
A heavy rain warning is currently in effect for the entirety of Fiji, alongside a strong wind warning for coastal areas in the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, including locations from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki. Additional warnings extend to the interior of Ba, Ra, Nadroga/Navosa, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, and nearby islands such as Vatulele, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups.
Flood alerts are in place for areas prone to flooding near and downstream of Fiji’s major rivers, with flash flood warnings issued for low-lying regions, especially on Vanua Levu and parts of Viti Levu. As TD 01F approaches, periods of heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong northwest winds, are expected to affect most areas starting later today into tomorrow.
There is a significant concern regarding localized heavy rainfall potentially causing flash floods in areas already saturated, where small streams and major river levels are anticipated to rise as the system continues on its path.
This situation highlights the importance of staying vigilant and prepared for severe weather conditions, as the resilience of the communities in Fiji can play a crucial role in minimizing disruption and damage. It’s important for residents to adhere to safety advisories and remain updated on the conditions as they develop in the coming days.
