As floodwaters in Fiji recede, the Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, particularly in the Western Division, to take swift action to protect themselves from the potential increase in climate-sensitive diseases. The organization warns that illnesses such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea often see a rise during this period following heavy rains.
Ragigia Dawai, Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat from flooding is diminishing, the likelihood of disease outbreaks remains significant. In recent days, the Red Cross has conducted assessments of 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in the Western Division, including those in evacuation centers.
The response teams in the Western Division are continuing to monitor conditions closely and offer necessary support to the affected communities. This proactive approach highlights the importance of community resilience and preparedness in the face of climate-related challenges.
As communities recover and rebuild, the Red Cross’s efforts serve as a reminder of the critical need for public health awareness and preventive measures during vulnerable periods. By taking the recommended precautions, communities can not only protect their health but also foster a spirit of solidarity and support during difficult times.
