The Ministry of Health & Medical Services (MHMS) has implemented enhanced surveillance protocols for Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) in light of a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases reported in China.
Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) not declaring a state of emergency over this outbreak, Fiji’s health authorities are taking proactive steps to monitor the situation closely. This is aimed at facilitating early detection and preventing the potential spread of the virus within the Pacific island nation.
HMPV typically causes symptoms similar to those of a common cold and is usually associated with mild illnesses. However, it can pose a greater risk to vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
