As floodwaters in Fiji begin to recede, the Fiji Red Cross Society is urging residents, particularly in the Western Division, to take proactive measures to protect themselves against a rise in climate-sensitive diseases. The organization is warning communities about illnesses such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea, which often see an increase during this time of year.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat of flooding is diminishing, the risk of disease transmission remains a significant concern. In recent days, the organization has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals affected by the floods, including those in evacuation centers and local communities.
Red Cross teams are actively monitoring the situation in the Western Division and are ready to offer support wherever it is required.
In light of the situation, it is crucial for communities to remain vigilant and prioritize health measures as they recover from the flooding. This proactive approach can help mitigate health risks and protect the well-being of residents during this challenging period.
Furthermore, the cooperative efforts of organizations like the Fiji Red Cross illustrate the importance of community solidarity during emergencies, showcasing a hopeful path toward recovery and resilience.
