Spread the love

The Divisional Commissioner for the Northern region, Uraia Rainima, has issued an urgent safety advisory as heavy rainfall continues to affect the Northern Division and the broader Fiji Group. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that the weather conditions are likely to deteriorate further in the coming days.

Rainima emphasized that safeguarding the health and safety of residents, including farmers and their essential livelihoods, is the utmost priority during this challenging time. He highlighted that rising water levels have already begun to impact low-lying areas and crossings, making vigilance and proactive safety measures crucial.

He urged residents, particularly those in areas prone to flooding, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. The key safety measures he recommended include:

1. Avoiding flooded areas and refraining from attempting to cross any flooded waters, keeping children and vulnerable individuals away from dangerous zones.
2. Preparing in advance by gathering essential items, including food, clothing, medications, and important documents, in case evacuation becomes necessary.
3. Ensuring livestock safety by relocating them to higher ground and securing feed and supplies for proper care during the adverse weather.

The Commissioner’s Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide residents with timely updates. It is encouraged that individuals stay informed through official channels and work cooperatively with emergency services.

For assistance, residents can reach out to the Commissioner Northern’s Office or their nearest police station.

This advisory serves as a reminder of the community’s resilience and the importance of taking proactive steps to ensure safety during natural weather events. With a collective effort, families and communities can navigate these challenges and protect their well-being.
