Heavy rain and strong wind warnings are currently in place across various regions of Fiji, as the nation continues to feel the effects of a slow-moving weather system associated with Tropical Cyclone Urmil. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning targeting the Western Division, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, as well as Kadavu and the nearby smaller islands. Additionally, alerts have been raised for heavy rain in the Macuata and northern Bua provinces.

A strong wind warning has been activated for the land areas within the Western Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, and Kadavu, with a stronger wind alert covering the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. The meteorological service explains that a persistent trough of low pressure, along with an abundance of cloud and showers, is contributing to the current weather conditions.

Tropical Cyclone Urmil, which is categorized as a Category 1 system, is predominantly located over Vanuatu and is expected to move southeast, passing southwest of Fiji. This cyclone is anticipated to generate a significant north-westerly wind flow, bringing with it active rain bands starting later today. For the affected regions, the forecast indicates a rise in showers leading to frequent and heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Winds are predicted to strengthen to 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially reaching as much as 60 kilometers per hour.

Authorities are urging the public to stay alert and take the necessary precautions as these weather conditions develop. The community is reminded to prepare for the potential impacts of heavy rains and strong winds, fostering a sense of readiness and resilience as Fiji navigates this challenging weather situation.
