The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has taken decisive action in response to an oil discharge reported into a public drain along Jai Ambamma Road in Vatuwaqa. Following an inspection by environmental inspectors, it was confirmed that the discharge stemmed from the yard of Ashok Transport Pte Limited.

As a result, the Ministry issued a Prohibition Notice and Remedial Orders under the Environment Management Act 2005. In line with the Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007, a fixed penalty of $1,500 has been imposed on the company. The directive mandates Ashok Transport to promptly clean up all oil contamination along the affected drain and within their facility, with a deadline for completion set at 14 days.

Furthermore, the Prohibition Notice requires the immediate halt of any discharge of oil, waste oil, or lubricants from the company’s premises. Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized that the Ministry will not tolerate non-compliance with environmental standards. He stated, “Non-compliance with waste permit conditions is a serious offence. Where negligence is established, the Ministry will not hesitate to impose penalties and pursue further legal action in accordance with the Environment Management Act. Environmental protection is not optional, and businesses must be accountable for the impacts of their operations.”

The Ministry has assured the public that it will continue to monitor the site closely to ensure compliance with the issued orders. Moreover, it is a reminder for all businesses, especially those situated near waterways, to uphold their responsibilities concerning the safe handling, storage, and containment of oil and other hazardous materials.

As part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Fiji’s waterways and marine environment, the Ministry will persist in its regular monitoring and compliance inspections in collaboration with relevant authorities. This commitment reflects a proactive approach toward environmental stewardship, demonstrating the Ministry’s dedication to protecting the natural resources of Fiji for future generations.
