Fiji Nursing Grad Finds Spark in Mental Health Internship

After four years of dedication and hard work, Emosi Naitoko celebrated his graduation with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Fiji. The 22-year-old from Kabariki, Kadavu, with ties to Vuna, Taveuni, was among 308 graduates honored during the ceremony held at the Saweni campus in Lautoka.

Reflecting on his educational journey, Mr. Naitoko emphasized the significance of internships, particularly one at St. Giles Hospital in Suva, which sparked his passion for mental health care. He noted, “It really showed a lot about the struggles that people face, the unseen or hidden struggles that people go through mentally.” He explained that while someone might appear well on the outside, their inner mental health can tell a different story, highlighting the importance of understanding the daily challenges faced by individuals.

Despite the rewarding experience, Mr. Naitoko encountered various difficulties during his studies. He shared that many of his peers struggled to complete the program, and his own journey was challenging, especially as a private student in his first year. He faced financial hurdles before successfully applying for the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) in his second year, which alleviated some of his burdens. “In my first year, I struggled a lot with fee payments,” he admitted.

Mr. Naitoko urged his fellow youth who are pursuing education to be mindful of their associations during their studies. He advised, “Do not give in to peer pressure and be determined about what you want to achieve in life. Choose the right friends that you hang around with.” His words serve as a reminder that the company one keeps can significantly influence their academic and personal journeys.

With a commitment to advancing his career, Mr. Naitoko plans to seek employment in the nursing field before pursuing further qualifications. His story embodies hope and perseverance, encouraging others to remain steadfast in their educational goals.
