The Fiji Police Force is currently investigating two separate incidents involving crew members of a foreign airline who were reportedly robbed and sexually assaulted in the early hours at a nightclub in Nadi. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, expressed his concern for the victims, labeling these alleged events as regrettable.

According to Gavoka, one crew member was affected by an alleged theft, while another experienced an alleged sexual assault. The authorities have already questioned a suspect known to them in relation to the sexual assault case.

In response to reports from various international media claiming that the crew members were being “detained,” Gavoka clarified that these reports are false. He assured that the crew members are in good health and are currently being housed at a local hotel designated for crew layovers. The crew has been advised by their Headquarters to remain in the hotel vicinity to assist with ongoing police investigations and are expected to return home by the end of the week.

Gavoka urged international media outlets to report responsibly, advising them to avoid sensationalism without accurate facts. He noted that while such incidents are unfortunate, they can occur in any location and reminded tourists to remain cautious when visiting nightclub areas, especially late at night.

This situation underscores the importance of safety and vigilance in nightlife settings, not just in Fiji but worldwide. It serves as a reminder of the need for all visitors to prioritize their personal safety and to report any suspicious activities immediately.

Overall, while the reported incidents are distressing, the swift action by the police and the support provided to the affected crew members demonstrate a commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being. The proactive measures being taken also highlight a tourist destination’s resilience and dedication to maintaining a secure environment for all visitors.
