The Fiji Police Force is currently looking into separate incidents involving crew members of a foreign airline who were reportedly robbed and sexually assaulted at a Nadi nightclub during the early hours of yesterday. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, confirmed the incidents and expressed the government’s concern for the victims.
Gavoka shared that the two incidents involved one case of theft and another of sexual assault, each affecting different crew members. Police have already questioned a suspect related to the sexual assault. He also emphasized that international media claims suggesting the crew members are being detained are inaccurate.
“The crew members are in good health and are currently staying at a local hotel designated for layovers,” Gavoka stated. He mentioned that the three crew members have been advised to remain within the hotel vicinity to ensure their availability for ongoing police investigations, but they are expected to return home before the end of the week.
Gavoka urged the international press to report responsibly and avoid sensationalism, highlighting that unfortunate incidents can happen anywhere, including in Fiji. He reiterated the importance of tourists exercising caution, especially in nightclub areas at night.
This incident, while serious, serves as a reminder for tourists and locals alike to maintain awareness of their surroundings and exercise caution in social settings, reinforcing community safety and vigilance.
