The National Federation Party (NFP) has expressed its unwavering support for party leader Professor Biman Chand Prasad as he has opted to step down from his position as Deputy Prime Minister and relinquish all ministerial responsibilities. This announcement follows charges leveled against him by the Fijian Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for alleged violations of the Political Parties Act dating back to 2015.
In a statement released today, NFP President Parmod Chand underscored the party’s backing of Professor Prasad, highlighting the solidarity and support they have received from branches nationwide and from supporters globally. “This demonstrates yet again why the NFP is an impregnable principled fortress with an indestructible foundation laid 62 years ago,” Mr. Chand stated, reflecting on the party’s resilience throughout its history.
Expressing gratitude towards the Prime Minister for his understanding and public backing, Mr. Chand reassured that the NFP remains committed to the coalition government’s stability and success, adhering to the principles established in their coalition agreement. He described the current circumstances as a “testing time” but is optimistic that truth, integrity, and justice will prevail. He characterized Professor Prasad as a leader of honor and dedication to the people of Fiji, emphasizing his ability to inspire confidence within the party.
Looking ahead, the NFP President announced that the party’s Management Board is scheduled to convene in mid-November to strategize on future steps and reinforce their commitment to serving the Fijian public. This proactive approach reaffirms the party’s pledge to remain steadfast in addressing the critical issues facing the nation.
The NFP’s history of resilience and commitment to democratic values, even amid challenges, paints a hopeful picture for its future as it navigates the complexities of governance. In light of recent events, the party’s emphasis on unity, principles, and dedication to the people seeks to foster public trust and support as they move forward.
