Trade relations between Fiji and New Zealand are experiencing significant growth, reaching a total of NZD 1.38 billion (approximately FJD 1.89 billion) as of September 2023. This update was presented by James Trusler, the president of the Fiji-New Zealand Business Council (FNZBC), during the council’s 34th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

During this reporting period, New Zealand exported goods and services valued at NZD 841.92 million to Fiji, while Fiji’s exports to New Zealand amounted to NZD 533.39 million. This positive trajectory follows a commitment made at last year’s FNZBC conference in Nadi, where a goal was set to increase bilateral trade to NZD 2 billion. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is backing this initiative by developing a strategic plan that includes forming a subcommittee in collaboration with the New Zealand Fiji Business Council (NZFBC).

Fiji has seen its exports to New Zealand reach an unprecedented peak, exceeding NZD 502 million (FJD 689 million) during the March quarter of 2023. These impressive figures illustrate a growing partnership between the two nations, demonstrating that strong trade relations can enhance economic collaboration.

Tourism also plays a key role in furthering these ties, with Fiji welcoming 70,794 tourists in January 2024, including 12,373 from New Zealand. This surge in visitors highlights the cultural and economic connections that are flourishing between the two countries.

The recent AGM resulted in the re-election of Trusler as president along with new committee members such as Anare Manulevu, Cama Raimuria, and Jeetender Rai, ensuring effective governance to nurture ongoing bilateral relations.

These advancements mark a hopeful phase in the economic partnership between Fiji and New Zealand, suggesting that continued collaboration could present further opportunities for growth and deepen the connections between both nations. Strategic goals and shared commitments are likely to foster enhanced economic interrelations and cultural exchanges, paving the way for a prosperous future.
