The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji has expressed serious concerns regarding drink driving and accidents on the roads as the country ushers in the New Year. Recent incidents have highlighted the gravity of the situation, with three pedestrians losing their lives due to intoxication and a staggering 261 drivers apprehended for driving under the influence between November and December.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that nine cases of DUI have been referred for show cause, indicating that more proceedings are likely as drivers increasingly disregard traffic regulations. Rokosawa emphasized that actions such as drink driving, speeding, and reckless behavior leave lasting impacts on families and communities.

To combat this alarming trend, he is urging drivers to make safety a priority by planning ahead, appointing designated sober drivers, and refraining from consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Additionally, he advises pedestrians to remain visible, utilize safe crossings, and avoid walking while intoxicated.

Passengers are also encouraged to be vigilant and refuse rides from impaired drivers. Rokosawa reinforced the message that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users and urged everyone to celebrate responsibly to ensure they arrive at their destinations safely. As Fiji enters the New Year, it’s essential for communities to prioritize safety and protect one another on the roads.
