Eseta Waqaira, a representative of Netball Fiji Under 21, is experiencing a remarkable milestone by representing her nation at the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup held in Gibraltar this past September. Her journey to this significant achievement has been marked by relentless hard work, sacrifices, and unwavering determination.

For Waqaira, netball transcends mere sport; it encapsulates her family values, her faith, and her sense of pride. “For me, putting God first is the most important thing. I will never forget to be grateful for everything He has done. Family is also a huge part of this journey. I miss home and all the sacrifices they have made to support me,” she expresses, highlighting the deep connection between her athletic pursuits and her roots.

Since moving from Fiji to New Zealand, Waqaira has faced an array of challenges both on and off the court. She credits her family for being her anchor during difficult times, reminding her to remain prayerful, to give her utmost effort in matches, and to stay connected to her origins.

Waqaira’s inspiring story is part of the Netball Australia documentary “For Court & Country,” which follows five Pacific athletes on their journey to international competition. To Waqaira, donning the Fijian jersey symbolizes more than just participation in a tournament; it is an opportunity to honor her family, her faith, and the extensive sacrifices that have paved the way for her athletic aspirations.

In the context of this prestigious tournament, the Baby Pearls concluded their campaign by clinching an 11th place finish, securing a hard-fought victory against Malaysia with a score of 56–48 in the final classification match. This outcome reflects not only the competitive spirit of the team but also the dedication that each player, including Waqaira, has demonstrated throughout the tournament.

Waqaira’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion, inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams while cherishing their heritage and family support.
