The Naitasiri South Netball Team is making strides as it prepares for the eagerly awaited revival of the Netball Inter-District Competition, which will commence next week. This marks a meaningful return to competitive netball for the newly-formed team as they participate alongside established entities such as the Suva Netball Association. The president of the association, Viliame Naisake, expressed gratitude for being included in this historic event, highlighting the tournament as a significant step in nurturing young netball talent in Fiji.

Naisake emphasized the association’s focus on fostering netball growth by providing a platform for players from Naselai in Rewa, Nakasi, Navua, and neighboring areas. The team’s headquarters for training is at the Nasinu Multipurpose Court, and they have managed to assemble four teams to compete, ranging from under-15 and under-18 girls to open women and men’s teams.

Many of the players are from diverse backgrounds, including primary and high school students, school leavers, and unemployed individuals from informal settlements in Nasinu. Naisake sees netball as a tool not only for athletic development but also for community engagement, discipline, and imparting a sense of purpose. The association’s initiative also presents a remarkable opportunity for players under strict bail conditions who have shown dedication to the team’s rigorous training, benefitting from spiritual mentoring and guidance.

Support from the broader community and team stakeholders is deemed crucial for the team’s success in the tournament. Naisake called for unity in backing the team, underscoring netball’s role in empowerment, building character, and fostering national pride. He conveyed that with adequate support, these young athletes could be afforded the opportunities they deserve, both on and off the court.

The competition, named the “Battle of the Netters,” is set for September 26 and 27, and aims to not only showcase the players’ talents but also strengthen the netball community in Fiji. This initiative follows similar sentiments seen in other articles and marks a resurgence in netball activity, promising to nurture future stars by providing a robust platform for player development. The revival of this competition signifies a bright future for netball in Fiji, encouraging increased participation and uniting communities through sport.
