Fiji Netball has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic drowning of former Fiji Pearls captain and head coach Unaisi Rokoura. In a heartfelt statement, the organization conveyed their “profound sadness” at losing one of the most revered figures in Fijian sports.
“Una was not only a remarkable athlete and coach but also a mentor and friend to many,” stated Fiji Netball President RubyAnn Sorovaki. “Her passing has left us heartbroken. We will reminisce and share the myriad of experiences we had with this great friend and sportsperson. Her legacy will live on through the countless players and colleagues she inspired.”
Rokoura began her commendable sports journey at the young age of 17, eventually representing Fiji in netball at six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships. Her leadership as captain of the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006 remains a significant highlight in her impressive portfolio.
Beyond netball, Rokoura was a versatile athlete, excelling in sports like hockey, rugby, basketball, and beach volleyball, showcasing her athletic versatility and passion for sports. Transitioning into coaching and administration, she led the Fiji Pearls as head coach from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, she served as a Country Coordinator for NetGO Fiji from 2017 to 2022.
Rokoura’s influence extended beyond Fiji as she coached the Papua New Guinea Pepes from 2015 to 2017 and worked as a consultant for the PNG Under-21 team. In Fiji, she served as a coach for CBM Netball Club and a fitness instructor at the University of the South Pacific Gym, inspiring generations of athletes.
“Her impact, both on and off the court, will be remembered with immense respect and gratitude,” remarked Sorovaki, affirming that Rokoura’s dedication to sport and empowering others will continue to light the path for athletes in the future.
As Fiji Netball and the broader sporting community mourns her loss, the spirit, leadership, and kindness of Unaisi Rokoura will undoubtedly continue to inspire many. Her legacy is one of strength, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to the sport and community she cherished.
