Tourism remains a vital component of Fiji’s economy, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, affirming its role in fostering national progress. In a recent statement, Gavoka highlighted that Fiji welcomed a record 986,367 visitors in 2025. Although this figure represents a modest 0.3% increase from the previous year, it stands as a significant milestone as the sector approaches the one-million-visitor mark.

Gavoka emphasized that the focus should extend beyond merely increasing visitor numbers; it should also encompass how tourism develops, who participates, and the resilience of the sector over time. “Tourism is powered by people,” he remarked, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of individuals and communities across this dynamic sector.

He attributed the robust recovery in tourism to improved air connectivity, policy reforms, and the hosting of international events. However, he was candid about the necessity for swifter reforms and enhanced involvement of small businesses and remote communities in the tourism landscape.

Further reinforcing the government’s dedication to sustainable tourism, Gavoka referenced the National Sustainable Tourism Framework. This includes initiatives aimed at incorporating climate resilience, empowering local communities, and enhancing workforce readiness. He urged stakeholders to explore beyond traditional tourist hotspots and develop new areas, such as Lau, while prioritizing long-term sustainability rather than rapid growth.

While acknowledging the shortcomings in various areas, Gavoka reiterated the importance of tourism-driven collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders. He reinforced that tourism will remain a core element of Fiji’s economic and societal evolution, pointing towards an optimistic future for the sector as it continues to adapt and grow in a sustainable manner.
