Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is still awaiting a detailed report concerning the damages to the RFNS Timo, the new vessel that replaced the $18 million RFNS Puamau, which tragically ran aground in Fulaga waters, Lau, in June. The RFNS Timo, a gift from the Australian government, was being transported to Fiji by sailors from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division after its commissioning.

“I have heard reports, but I have not received the official briefing from the minister responsible for the Navy,” Rabuka stated. He emphasized that the investigation might reveal whether the incident was due to an accident or negligence.

Commodore Humphrey Tawake, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, explained that the grounding incident resulted from a combination of high winds and restricted docking space, along with limited navigation clearance because of nearby commercial boats. He acknowledged the possibility of inappropriate behavior being a contributing factor, noting that some crew members were allegedly intoxicated during the incident.

This situation highlights the challenges the navy faces in ensuring safety and preparedness while managing new assets. As investigations proceed, it is vital for transparency and accountability to be upheld to maintain public trust in the naval forces. The navy has an opportunity to learn from this incident and implement measures to enhance training and safety protocols for future maritime operations, potentially leading to improved practices and ultimately safeguarding personnel and vessels.
