Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its replacement, the RFNS Timo, has encountered issues due to a docking incident that occurred on Thursday as it was berthing at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division was in the process of bringing the ship in from Australia.
The RFNS Timo, another gift from the Australian government, was meant to replace the recently decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which had hit a reef in Lau in June, costing $18 million. During Thursday’s docking operations, the new vessel suffered minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, stated that the incident was a result of tricky gusty winds combined with limited space due to other commercial vessels in the area. He did not dismiss the possibility of unprofessional conduct being a factor, noting reports that several crew members may have been intoxicated.
In a step towards accountability, those involved in alleged unprofessional behavior have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Within 24 hours post-incident, navy engineers conducted a detailed assessment and repairs, which are currently nearing completion, ensuring the RFNS Timo will return to operational readiness soon.
Moreover, Commodore Tawake emphasized the importance of reviewing operational protocols and crew training in order to enhance procedures and prevent similar incidents in the future. He expressed gratitude to the Australian Government for its continual support under the Vuvale Partnership, calling the incident a reminder of the challenges in maritime operations and the ongoing need for improvement in training, professionalism, and discipline.
Despite these setbacks, the structural integrity of the RFNS Timo remains intact, allowing for a hopeful outlook for its continued service.
Overall, this incident highlights the necessity for vigilance in operational procedures and the importance of professionalism in maintaining the safety and effectiveness of naval operations.
