Fiji Navy Suspends Sailors Amid Docking Incident Investigation

Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following an incident involving the new vessel RFNS Timo on December 19. Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, confirmed the suspensions as investigations into the incident continue.

The RFNS Timo, which was recently gifted by the Australian government to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, suffered minor damage to its stern during docking operations at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The damage occurred due to challenges including gusty winds and limited docking space, compounded by the presence of commercial vessels nearby.

Reports indicate that some sailors may have been intoxicated during the incident, prompting disciplinary action. Commodore Tawake noted that although these sailors remain part of the naval force, their suspension is a measure of accountability while further inquiries take place.

Additionally, Commodore Tawake mentioned ongoing efforts to obtain approval for the disposal of the grounded RFNS Puamau, with proceedings toward a court martial expected to commence this month.

This incident highlights the importance of accountability and safety within naval operations. As the investigations proceed, the hope remains that appropriate measures will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring a strong and reliable naval force for Fiji.
