“Fiji Navy Successfully Salvages RFNS Puamau After Grounding Incident in Fulaga”

The Fiji Navy has successfully salvaged the RFNS Puamau patrol boat three weeks after it ran aground near the Lau group’s Fulaga Island. The boat was retrieved from the reef after two weeks of intensive operations involving the Ratu Rabici tug and support from RFNS Savenaca, and it has now been moved to safer waters near Ogea Island. A comprehensive damage assessment will be carried out before planning the next steps.

The salvage operation was coordinated respecting traditional customs and with the consent of the local tribal authority, or Vanua, of Ogea, focusing on reducing environmental damages and avoiding further potential damages to the ship. The Fiji Navy expressed gratitude to the salvage teams, comprised of both local and international specialists, for their continuous dedication.

The Navy further commended the Ratu Rabici’s captain and crew, RFNS Savenaca’s team, Navy divers, and engineers for their tireless efforts despite difficult conditions. The Navy also thanked the local communities for their continuous support and encouraging messages. As the salvage operation wraps up, an ongoing Board of Inquiry will keep investigating the grounding incident to establish the facts and make recommendations for the future.
