Fiji Navy Steps Up Ocean Patrols After Reef Fish Discovery

In a proactive measure to protect Fiji’s oceanic wealth, the Fiji Navy has executed a maritime enforcement operation in the Northern Division, including Rotuma. This initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to safeguarding the nation’s marine resources.

According to the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN), the operation was prompted by routine Maritime Domain Awareness activities carried out from the Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre, where various agencies collaborate to monitor Fiji’s extensive maritime territory. During these patrols, the Navy intercepted a Fiji-flagged fishing vessel to ensure compliance with local fisheries regulations.

The RFNS Timo, which was conducting standard operations at the time, was redirected to board and inspect the identified vessel. Navy personnel verified the vessel’s licensing documents, scrutinized fishing gear, and assessed the catch to ensure adherence to Fiji’s fisheries laws. Notably, several tonnes of reef fish were discovered in the vessel’s hold, prompting its escort to Suva for further regulatory inspection.

This operation underscores the RFN’s dedication to identifying, disrupting, and deterring any activities that could jeopardize Fiji’s ocean resources. The Fiji Navy highlighted the improved Maritime Domain Awareness capabilities facilitated by the VMESC, which enhances coordinated surveillance and response efforts across the nation’s 1.3 million square kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Fiji Navy reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Fisheries to conduct maritime patrols, stating that boarding and inspection operations will be an integral part of their routine activities. Additionally, they pledged to work with partner agencies to ensure the sustainable management of Fiji’s marine resources for the benefit of all Fijians.

The ongoing commitment to maritime enforcement reflects a positive approach towards preserving Fiji’s rich marine biodiversity and ensuring that it continues to thrive for future generations.
