Fiji Navy Sailors Suspended Amid Docking Incident Investigation

Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following a docking incident involving the new vessel RFNS Timo on December 19. This suspension was confirmed by Commander Commodore Humphrey Tawake, who stated that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The RFNS Timo, a gift from the Australian government intended to replace the recently decommissioned $18 million RFNS Puamau, sustained minor damage to its stern during docking operations at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The damage occurred as the sailors, who were bringing the vessel in from Australia, attempted to dock while contending with gusty winds and limited space due to nearby commercial vessels.

There are allegations that some sailors were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Commodore Tawake emphasized the importance of the disciplinary process, stating that while the involved sailors remain members of the force, they face suspension until the investigation concludes.

Additionally, Commodore Tawake mentioned that they are currently seeking approvals to dispose of the RFNS Puamau, which had previously run aground in the Lau waters, and that proceedings for a court martial of the sailors involved are set to begin this month.

In summary, the incident highlights the challenges faced by the naval crew during docking operations, as well as the necessary steps being taken to ensure accountability within the naval ranks. The ongoing investigations signify a commitment to maintaining standards and safety within the fleet.

This situation also presents an opportunity for the Navy to reinforce its protocols and training to prevent similar incidents in the future, ultimately strengthening its operational capacity.
