The Fiji Navy is reinforcing its role in fisheries surveillance amidst growing concerns from maritime island communities regarding overfishing and illegal fishing activities within its waters. Navy Commander Captain Timoci Natuva emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries to enhance monitoring and surveillance operations.

“We support the Ministry of Fisheries in terms of surveillance,” Commander Natuva stated, highlighting that while the Navy provides assistance, the enforcement authority remains with the ministry. He detailed that naval assets are being utilized to extend monitoring coverage and pinpoint fishing hotspots in Fijian waters.

Captain Natuva also announced that a primary focus for the Navy this year will be expanding engagement with maritime communities, especially those in outer island areas. “One of our aims this year is to strengthen community engagement, so we can better understand the challenges faced by people living in the islands,” he explained.

Furthermore, he noted that improved communication would enhance the Navy’s ability to deploy vessels and small boats more effectively in response to reports of illegal fishing activities. This proactive approach aims to ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources and support for local fishing communities, assuring a healthier marine environment for future generations.
