President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has highlighted the necessity of safeguarding customary ownership in any reforms to Fiji’s native land laws while ensuring the active involvement of indigenous landowners. Speaking to legal professionals in Nadi, he emphasized the significance of land as a core element of identity, heritage, and national development, underscoring the need for sensitivity and thorough consultation throughout the reform process.
He called on the Attorney General’s Office to collaborate closely with the Great Council of Chiefs to facilitate meaningful participation from landowners in any legislative changes. Ratu Naiqama stressed the importance of “free, prior and informed consent,” which he identified as vital for the successful reform of the native land laws.
Additionally, he pointed out that the review of these laws must carefully balance the pressing needs for development with the rights and protections of landowners, illustrating a commitment to fostering collaboration and respect for traditional values amidst necessary legal advancements. This approach reflects a hopeful direction towards inclusivity and a shared future, as Fiji navigates the complexities of land reform.
