Fiji National University (FNU) has reinforced its steadfast commitment to combatting violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. The institution firmly states that any kind of violence or discrimination directed at women will not be accepted both within its campus and in the broader community.
Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, Vice-Chancellor of FNU, emphasized the university’s unwavering dedication to creating an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and safe. She remarked, “Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society.”
In her address, Professor Nabobo-Baba also urged all Fijians to acknowledge the significant contributions women make across various sectors, noting that women are key players in education, business, health, and governance. She asserted, “Women are no longer defined by traditional gender roles but are integral to Fiji’s progress and success. It is imperative that we support and empower them to thrive.”
As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor’s message resonated with a call for solidarity and meaningful action. She encouraged all Fijians to reflect on their responsibility in cultivating a culture of respect and safety, advocating for justice, and supporting survivors. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a future where women and girls can live with dignity and freedom from fear,” she stated.
The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan serves as a framework guiding FNU’s initiatives aimed at upholding gender equality and promoting a secure and inclusive environment for everyone.
This commitment by Fiji National University is a hopeful reminder that institutions play a crucial role in advocating for change, and through collective efforts, progress towards a more equitable society can be achieved. Every small step taken today is a stride towards a future free from violence and discrimination.
