A group of students from Fiji National University (FNU) recently participated in an enriching industrial field trip, gaining firsthand experience in occupational health and safety (OHS) practices. The excursion, which took place last month, allowed students from the Certificate IV and Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety programs to explore various workplaces in the western region of Fiji, including Port Denarau Marina in Nadi.
During their visit to Port Denarau Marina, the students were guided by Operations Manager Prikesh Singh and Security, Health and Safety and Environment Manager Apenisa Vakararawa. The visit included an insightful look into the marina’s daily operations, where students were able to observe potential workplace hazards and learn about effective risk control measures. With the assistance of their OHS instructor, Prashnil Dass, the students were able to see OHS best practices in action, an experience that is instrumental in preparing them for their future careers.
Fiji National University highlighted the importance of such hands-on exposure in building students’ confidence and equipping them with the necessary skills to become competent professionals in the field. In addition to Port Denarau Marina, students also visited several other significant locations, including the Fiji Airways Hangar, the Water Authority of Fiji Nagado Treatment Plant, Total Energies Vuda Terminal, Lautoka Port, and Pernix Fiji’s Vuda Power Station.
These real-world experiences not only enhance students’ learning but also bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, fostering a comprehensive understanding of workplace safety in diverse environments.
