Fiji National University (FNU) has seen a remarkable increase in student enrollment for the 2024 academic year, reaching a record high of 26,738 students, up from 23,862 in 2023. This surge marks the largest headcount in five years, as reported in their latest Annual Report submitted to Parliament.

The most significant growth was observed at the National Training & Productivity Centre (NTPC), which welcomed 8,169 students this year, a substantial rise from 5,938 the previous year, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 37.6%. This trend illustrates a growing interest in vocational training and upskilling programs, a vital area in today’s job market.

Enrolment numbers also varied across other colleges within FNU. The College of Humanities & Education enrolled 4,385 students, while the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences saw 2,863. The College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry had 985 students enrolled, and the Fiji Maritime Academy / Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies recorded 1,554 students. Interestingly, there were slight declines in the College of Business, Hospitality & Tourism Studies and the College of Engineering, Science & Technology, continuing a trend observed since 2020.

This overall growth in student enrollment at FNU aligns with previous reports highlighting its dominance as the leading institution for private student enrollment from 2020 to 2024, with a total of 50,255 private students during this timeframe. Such figures showcase the university’s commitment to providing education that meets the evolving needs of the workforce.

The rising enrolment numbers reflect a positive shift in student attitudes towards higher education and vocational training, signaling a hopeful future for Fiji’s educational landscape. As the nation continues to develop and grow, FNU’s role in equipping students with essential skills is more crucial than ever.
