The Fiji National University’s Nasinu Campus was bustling last week as over a thousand prospective students attended the university’s open day. With participation from 45 schools, students took the opportunity to gather information about potential studies for their future.

The open day’s theme, “Dream it, Weave it, Achieve it,” reflected its purpose beyond simply showcasing academic programs. Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, the university’s vice-chancellor, emphasized that the event was a chance for individuals to explore the possibilities available at FNU. She encouraged attendees, whether they were contemplating their next educational steps or simply curious, to seek inspiration for turning their dreams into reality.

During the event, applications for Semester 1, 2025 were accepted, and successful applicants received instant provisional offers. Finau Joy Afeaki Batiweti, a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries student from the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF), expressed her enthusiasm about participating in the open day and sharing insights with other students. She noted that many assume the CAFF campus only focuses on agriculture, but the college also offers programs in fisheries and forestry.

Batiweti advised students to take the opportunity to explore their options during the open day, encouraging them to ask the right questions about job opportunities stemming from their chosen fields of study. She highlighted the abundance of job prospects in fisheries and urged students not to limit themselves to traditional white-collar professions.

Also present was Epeli Cagialau, a Year 13 student from Latter-Day Saints Church College, who studies carpentry and automotive engineering through the TVET program. He expressed his interest in automotive engineering while engaging with various engines on display during his tour of the engineering booth.

Cagialau appreciated the experience, particularly the chance to learn about different engine types, and welcomed the opportunity to speak with university students currently studying and doing apprenticeships in the automotive sector.

The two-day open day event in Nasinu attracted thousands of visitors, and similar events were also held at the university’s Naduna, Namaka, and Natabua campuses last week.
