The Fiji National University (FNU) has announced the launch of the FNU Foundation at its Namaka Campus in Nadi, aimed at aiding underprivileged students and alleviating financial obstacles to higher education. The initiative, spearheaded by Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, intends to guarantee that financial difficulties do not hinder students from completing their academic pursuits.
Former President of Fiji and Na Turaga Bale na Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who serves as the Foundation’s patron, contributed a generous donation of $10,000 during the launch. He has called on others to also take part in this charitable cause, emphasizing the Foundation’s vital role in ensuring equitable access to education, inspiring collective commitment toward the goal of uplifting Fijian students regardless of their socio-economic status.
The Foundation has already outlined several initiatives, including the Coffee Forward Initiative, which allows students and staff to pre-pay for coffee, with the proceeds being used to provide meals for those in financial need. Additionally, the Veilomoni Closet is designed to offer professional attire to students unable to afford suitable clothing for job interviews and networking events. For those experiencing food insecurity, the Veilomoni Food Pantry will provide essential groceries and meals, alleviating daily financial pressures on students.
Professor Nabobo-Baba highlighted that the Foundation represents FNU’s dedication to both its students and the community, stating, “At FNU, we firmly believe in caring for our people, upholding honesty, and serving with excellence.” She expressed confidence that the Foundation will grow, with ongoing funding to enhance support for students beyond just tuition fees.
The impact of this initiative aligns with broader educational goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focusing on quality education and reducing inequalities. With strategic measures in place, the Foundation’s efforts signify a hopeful advancement in educational access in Fiji, fostering an environment where students can thrive and realize their dreams.
This initiative reflects a growing understanding of the vital role education plays in personal and community development. As FNU continues to expand its outreach, it could pave the way for a more equitable educational landscape, ensuring all Fijian youth have the opportunity to succeed academically.
