The Fiji Football Association has announced the appointment of French coach Stephane Auvray as the new head coach for the national men’s football team. The 44-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously played as a professional midfielder for Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and Brunei DPMM FC in the Singapore Premier League. Auvray is also known for his leadership skills, having captained the Guadeloupe national team where he was renowned for his calm demeanor and strong midfield presence.
After retiring as a player, Auvray took on the coaching role for the Saint Martin national team in 2019 before stepping into a position with FIFA as a Talent Coach in 2023. His recent appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for Fiji Football, marking a fresh chapter as the team strives to improve its performance in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 football season.
This transition comes on the heels of a thorough review and restructuring within the Fiji Football Association, particularly after the underwhelming tenure of former coach Rob Sherman, who faced criticism following a heavy defeat to New Zealand during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania qualifiers. The urgency for new leadership has been underscored by Fiji’s preparations for their international tour, highlighting the association’s commitment to elevating the standard of its national teams.
Alongside Auvray’s appointment, Fiji Football is also in the process of hiring a technical director, signaling a robust intent to revamp coaching strategies and enhance player development at all levels. The focus on these changes signals a hopeful outlook for Fijian football, as both fans and players alike anticipate new energies and strategies that may yield positive results in future competitions. The collaborative spirit and proactive measures being taken could herald a new era of success and growth within the sport in Fiji.
