Fiji Names Former Rugby Star as Ambassador for Sport in Europe

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji has appointed Julian Vulakoro as the country’s new Ambassador for Sport in France and Europe. This role aims to enhance sports diplomacy and strengthen international sporting relations, crucial for showcasing Fiji’s athletic talent on the global stage.

Vulakoro is a former Fijian rugby player with four international caps and has spent the last two decades making significant contributions to the rugby scene in France. He is already recognized for his efforts in promoting Fijian athletes within European leagues, notably leading the “Les Fidjiens en France” association, which offers support and networking for Fijian rugby players residing in Europe.

His long-standing partnership with the French Embassy in Fiji has seen him participate in various initiatives that foster connections through sports. Notably, he played a critical role in sending Fijian volunteers to France under the France Voluntaries program, which aims to enhance inclusion and diversity in sports. Additionally, Vulakoro has been instrumental in coordinating Fijian delegations for major sporting events, including the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games.

In his new capacity, Vulakoro will engage with sports fans, athletes, and organizations across France and Europe, promoting Fiji’s sports culture and talent. The Fijian government has expressed its strong support for Vulakoro in this role, highlighting the importance of advancing the nation’s interests in international sports.

This appointment comes at a time when Fiji is strengthening its ties with France through various sporting events, as seen in recent meetings between Prime Minister Rabuka and French rugby officials. Such collaborations emphasize the importance of sports as a vehicle for diplomatic relations, offering mutual benefits and the potential for future partnerships.

With Vulakoro at the helm as Ambassador for Sport, there is a hopeful outlook for enhanced engagement and opportunities for both Fijian athletes and international sporting collaborations, further solidifying Fiji’s identity as a prominent player in the global sports arena.
