Fiji Museum Poetry Project Elevates Local Writers

A new initiative at the Fiji Museum is being recognized as a significant advancement in promoting cultural pride and fostering creative opportunities among the Fijian community. Titled *Poetry and Prose at the Fiji Museum*, this literary project showcases the works of ten local writers from Poetry Shop Fiji, each inspired by a selected museum artifact to create a poem or story.

The focus of this publication extends beyond mere artistic display; it serves to benefit everyday Fijians. Charlotte Darlow, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, emphasized the project’s significance by stating, “The importance of this project is that it is about Fijian poets and Fijian writers, giving them the chance to publish in the country.” This initiative allows writers to create work intended for local audiences, reflecting the experiences, values, and histories of Fijians and strengthening their cultural identity.

One contributor, artist Brittany Nawaqatabu, expressed that the project enables individuals to delve into their roots and explore the shared narratives that make Fiji distinctive. By sharing personal stories, the writers foster appreciation for the rich diversity that exists within the nation.

Lata Yaqona, the Fiji Museum Manager of Experience, remarked that the initiative effectively bridges history with contemporary relevance. She explained, “People often think museum objects are anonymous, but they’ve been brought alive through the work showcased here tonight.” This connection not only enhances the engagement of families and students with cultural learning but also revitalizes historical artifacts, making them relevant for future generations.

Funded by the New Zealand High Commission, the project not only inspires but also paves the way for Fijian artists by building their confidence, helping them to develop portfolios, and encouraging careers in writing and the creative arts. This communal approach to storytelling and heritage fosters a sense of pride and unity, framing a hopeful future where cultural narratives continue to flourish.
