The Fiji Museum has become a vibrant center of ancient storytelling with the launch of a three-day Warli Art Workshop, led by acclaimed Indian folk artist and yoga educator Rashmi Chaudhary. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, introduces participants to one of India’s oldest tribal art forms.

Warli painting, which hails from the Maharashtra region and has been practiced for over 2,000 years, is celebrated for its simplicity in utilizing geometric shapes—such as circles, triangles, and squares—to convey the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. During the workshop’s opening, Mrs. Chaudhary emphasized that Warli art surpasses mere technical skill, stating, “Warli art does not seek perfection; it seeks expression.” She highlighted the art form’s universal appeal, noting its resonance with the community and simplicity found in the Pacific region.

Mrs. Chaudhary, a certified yoga educator residing in Suva and associated with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is recognized for her commitment to women’s wellness. This workshop exemplifies her holistic approach, merging creativity with mindfulness. Participants began by mastering basic symbols, eventually moving on to depict traditional scenes on modern items such as bottles and plates.

The event underscores the increasing cultural exchange between India and Fiji. As the workshop progresses, participants will channel their skills into transforming recycled materials into expressive illustrations of village life and rituals. “I hope participants take home more than just a painting,” Mrs. Chaudhary expressed, “I hope they take home a feeling of calm and connection.”

This workshop showcases not only the rich artistic heritage of India but also fosters meaningful connections within the diverse community of Fiji, leaving a lasting impact on all those involved.
