President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Fiji Museum, emphasizing its role as a vital repository of the nation’s cultural and historical identity. During the event, he praised the museum’s contributions to social cohesion, understanding, and unity within Fiji.

Ratu Naiqama highlighted the museum’s extensive collection of over 10,000 artifacts, which serve as important links to Fiji’s past. “As generations have before, we gather here at our very own Fiji Museum to tell an essential part of our Fijian story,” he stated, acknowledging the efforts of numerous stakeholders, including the museum’s Board of Trustees, staff, and donors, who have been instrumental in its development.

A key focus for the museum moving forward is the digitization project currently being spearheaded by a young team. Supported by a grant from the US Embassy’s Ambassadors’ Fund for Cultural Preservation, this initiative aims to create the first complete inventory of the museum’s collections and increase public access to Fiji’s heritage online. Ratu Naiqama expressed his gratitude towards the embassy for their support, calling the digitization project a critical step towards ensuring Fiji’s cultural treasures are preserved for future generations.

Furthermore, Ratu Naiqama called for increased discussions around the repatriation of Fijian artifacts residing in foreign museums and institutions. He noted the importance of reclaiming these treasures, stating, “It is perhaps time to initiate a policy to return these treasures which are our collective inheritance, to our national museum here in Suva.”

The museum continues to play a crucial educational role by fostering intergenerational learning and cultural understanding in Fiji’s diverse society. As Fiji moves towards a digitally inclusive future, the ongoing renovations and digitization efforts reflect a hopeful commitment to preserving the nation’s cultural identity while fostering unity among its people.

Overall, the Fiji Museum’s efforts not only celebrate its rich history but also pave the way for future generations to connect with their cultural roots, promoting a sense of pride and belonging within the community.
