Tevita Matanimeke, a convicted murderer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Suva High Court after a brutal attack that resulted in the death of 60-year-old Nitya Nand. The incident occurred earlier this year on Namuka Street in Samabula, where Matanimeke entered Nand’s home intending to commit robbery. Tragically, Nand succumbed to his injuries after spending several days in critical condition at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

At just 18 years old at the time of the crime, Matanimeke’s actions have left a profound impact on Nand’s family, who are now grappling with the loss and trauma that this violent act has inflicted upon them. Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, during the sentencing, highlighted the severity of the crime, reminding the court that murder is the most serious offense encompassed within the Crimes Act. The court also addressed the lasting emotional scars inflicted on the victim’s family, particularly focusing on Nand’s son, who was present during the incident and has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He is currently receiving treatment at Saint Giles Hospital.

CCTV footage captured Matanimeke’s intrusion into Nand’s property, revealing his premeditated actions. Furthermore, DNA evidence from blood samples taken from the cane knife used in the assault confirmed his involvement.

Matanimeke will be eligible to apply for parole after serving 14 years and has a 30-day window to file an appeal. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of violent crime on individuals and families, underscoring the importance of justice in the aftermath of such tragedies.
