Fiji Murder Case Delayed: What’s Next for the Accused?

The High Court in Suva has postponed the delivery of its judgement regarding two men charged with the murder of a Fiji-born Canadian. Edward Nand and Salimoni Lagicere appeared in court before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, initially slated for judgement this afternoon, but the decision has now been rescheduled to February 12.

The alleged murder occurred in 2023 near Korovou in Tailevu. It is claimed that the victim had been planning to meet a woman he had been conversing with on social media. However, it was later revealed that the woman’s profile was a fabrication created by one of the accused. The two men reportedly orchestrated a plan to rob the victim upon his arrival in Fiji.

Tragically, the victim’s body was subsequently discovered floating in the Waimaro River, close to Waito Settlement in Tailevu. The charges against the accused were brought forward by the Director of Public Prosecutions, with state representation by lawyer Zenith Zunaid. Lagicere is defended by lawyer Loqi Cati, while Nand is represented by lawyer Sunil Gosai.

Recently, Nand had his bail revoked at the request of the prosecution, meaning both men remain in custody as they await the forthcoming judgement.

This case highlights the serious issue of online deception and its potential consequences, reminding the public about the importance of being cautious when meeting individuals from social media. With the next court date approaching, there is hope that justice will be served and the truth will come to light.

In summary, the court has adjourned its decision on the murder case until February, as both defendants remain in custody.
