The Fijian Elections Office has confirmed that the voting process for the upcoming municipal elections in September will closely resemble that of the previous general elections. Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa noted that while there will be minor differences, the general procedures will remain familiar to voters.
Mataiciwa emphasized the importance of having a voter card, stating, “In terms of the voting process, it is quite similar.” She highlighted that under current law, there is a requirement for a Local Government register of voters, and preparations are underway for the registration of eligible voters prior to the elections. This registration process will be initiated in the coming months, with more detailed information to be shared with stakeholders during briefings scheduled for March.
While the fundamental voting procedures will remain consistent, Mataiciwa pointed out that one notable change will be in the format of the ballot paper. Unlike the general elections, where voters are presented with numbers on the ballot, the municipal election ballots will feature the names of candidates along with their associated parties.
The elections office is committed to ensuring that voters are well-informed and prepared for the upcoming elections, marking an important step in engaging the community in the democratic process. Involvement in local governance is crucial, and the smooth transition from general to municipal elections signifies a dedication to maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s electoral system.
