Fiji Mulls Under-16 Social Media Restrictions in Child-Protection Push

Information Minister Lynda Tabuya has called for a ban on social media usage for children aged 16 years and under, emphasizing the need to address the rising concerns surrounding online behavior. As the minister responsible for media, she stated that the Government should engage in discussions on this critical issue due to the increasing scrutiny and negativity prevalent on social media platforms.

Tabuya highlighted disturbing trends, including the frequent use of profanity on platforms like TikTok by both children and adults. She urged society to exercise their rights and responsibilities more mindfully. Citing international examples, she pointed to similar legislative measures being implemented in Australia, effective December 10, and Malaysia, which is set to enact its laws in January 2026.

“This issue should be a collective consideration for all Fijians,” said Tabuya. She expressed concern over the vast number of mobile phones and social media users in Fiji, underscoring the alarming prevalence of cyberbullying, which she believes has become normalized.

Tabuya stressed that the proposal to amend existing laws is fundamentally a “child protection angle,” reinforcing the idea that it’s the duty of parents to monitor and guide their children’s online behavior. She stated, “We need to protect our children, 16 and under,” emphasizing their lack of maturity and discernment when navigating online spaces.

By championing this cause, Tabuya aims to safeguard the well-being of young users, encouraging a more responsible approach to social media within the community. The hope is that through proactive discussions and potential legislation, Fiji can foster a healthier online environment for its children.
