The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is taking significant measures to bolster the security of Fiji’s ports, waters, and international entry points. In a proactive initiative to enhance the safe and lawful entry of vessels and travelers, FRCS has begun integrating advanced passenger intelligence systems.
Shelini Kumar, the Director of Border and Customs, stated that the implementation of the Advanced Passenger Information (API) system is underway, alongside exploration of the Advanced Targeting System for Goods (ATSG) through collaboration with the World Customs Organization. Kumar expressed optimism about the establishment of an integrated targeting center in Nadi, which has already facilitated successful interceptions. “To enhance that unit, we need to have advanced information about traveling passengers,” she emphasized.
These developments are part of a broader national strategy designed to fortify border security. The FRCS is currently receiving information from airlines once flights depart from their countries of origin; however, initiatives are in progress to enhance passenger notification requirements in conjunction with immigration procedures.
Additional measures encompass existing protocols, such as mandatory 48-hour pre-arrival reporting for yachts and vessels, and continuous monitoring coordinated with the naval base at MESC. Joint inspections by Customs, Police, Navy, and Immigration officers further strengthen these security features.
Similar previous efforts have included the incorporation of advanced scanning technology, and proactive monitoring to address the growing trade volume and prevent illicit activities. Enhanced collaboration with international partners has also played a crucial role in combating illegal goods entering the nation. This multi-faceted approach reflects a strong commitment to not only ensuring safety and security at Fiji’s borders but also to maintaining the smooth flow of legitimate trade and travel.
As Fiji moves forward with these initiatives, there is a hopeful outlook for an efficient and secure border management system that ensures the safety of the community and the protection of the nation’s economic interests. The continuous evolution of technology and inter-agency cooperation signifies a robust approach toward facing emerging challenges in border security, promising a safer future for all who traverse Fiji’s borders.
