Fiji has advanced to the semifinals of the OFC Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-1 draw against New Caledonia in their final Group A match held in Papua New Guinea. With this result, Fiji, coached by Rob Sherman, finishes second in the group with a total of five points, while New Caledonia leads with seven points.
Despite entering the match with hopes of securing the top spot, Fiji’s Captain Roy Krishna managed to score first, netting a penalty in injury time of the first half after being fouled in the box. However, New Caledonia fought back aggressively in the second half, resulting in a goal from Jean-Jacques Katrawa in the 59th minute, thanks to an excellent assist from Abezeier Jeno.
Fiji came close to clinching the victory late in the game when substitute Christopher Wasasala’s header found its way past the goalkeeper but unfortunately struck the post and was cleared away by the New Caledonian defense.
Looking ahead, the semifinals are set to occur next year in New Zealand, where Fiji is expected to face the host nation. This marks an exciting opportunity for the Fijian team to showcase their skills on a larger stage as they aim for World Cup qualification.
In summary, while Fiji did not secure a victory, their progress to the semifinals demonstrates their resilience and talent in the competitive arena of international football, setting the stage for a promising future in the tournament.
