The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has begun the process of disposing of sensitive materials, including ballot papers, from the 2022 General Election. This operation, adhering to legal requirements, started at the FEO Warehouse in Laucala Beach and is expected to last five weeks, during which approximately 2,066 ballot boxes will be securely addressed either through recycling or incineration.

Under Fiji’s electoral laws, sensitive materials must be disposed of within six months following the release of election results. Initially, the FEO had chosen to extend the storage period due to an investigation into a substantial technical “glitch” that occurred during the 2022 elections. However, the Government has since decided to discontinue this investigation and shift its focus towards implementing preventive measures for future elections.

Political representatives from the Fiji Labour Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party attended the disposal in a demonstration of transparency. Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa emphasized that this disposal not only concludes one electoral cycle but also serves as a pivotal step in preparing for the upcoming 2026 General Election, which is of significant importance to Fijians.

Preparations for the 2026 election are already in motion, with FEO officials actively engaging in voter registration drives and civic awareness campaigns to encourage electoral participation in diverse communities. Mataiciwa highlighted that these initiatives are crucial for nurturing an electoral process that is fair, inclusive, and representative.

Although apprehensions about glitches from the previous election persist, this initiative symbolizes a new beginning and reflects the commitment of Fijian authorities to establish a stronger electoral framework. The measures being adopted underscore a dedication to transparency and the vital role of public trust in the electoral system, ultimately fostering optimism for future elections that are fairer and more reliable.

This proactive approach not only aims to address past deficiencies but also nurtures hope for a more democratic and engaged citizenry in the electoral process.
