The recent passing of a young police officer has heightened Fiji’s determination to tackle the issues of illicit drug cultivation and trafficking. Minister for Policing Iowane Naivalurua expressed this sentiment during the National Talanoa Session on Responding to Illicit Drugs in Fiji. The officer, a 25-year-old from the Lami Police Station, tragically died while on duty.

During his address, Mr. Naivalurua remarked on the profound sadness felt within the police force and the greater national community following this loss. He articulated that the officer’s death not only mourned a valuable life but has also invigorated a united effort to fight the drug crisis plaguing the nation.

Out of respect for the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, the minister refrained from commenting further but acknowledged the dedication and bravery of the deceased officer. “He served Fiji with honour and commitment and will always be remembered,” Mr. Naivalurua stated, urging that his sacrifice should fortify their collective resolve.

The minister assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is in progress, emphasizing the police’s commitment to utilizing every lawful resource at their disposal. He pledged that accountability will be a priority, declaring “those responsible, wherever they may be, will be identified, arrested, and will face the full weight of the law.”

Mr. Naivalurua underscored the obligation to seek justice, not only for the officer’s family but also for his colleagues and the broader community. “We owe that to his family. We owe that to his colleagues. And we owe that to the people of Fiji,” he reaffirmed.

The National Talanoa Session brought together various stakeholders, including government agencies and community leaders, to foster coordinated responses to the escalating threat of illicit drugs in Fiji. This gathering signifies a collective move towards a safer, drug-free community and highlights the resilience of the Fijian spirit in the face of adversity.
