The National Gymnasium in Suva witnessed a heartfelt gathering today, filled with individuals from various sectors of society who came to honor Fijian Featherweight Boxer Ubayd Haider, affectionately known in the boxing community as the ‘Prince of Fiji.’

Haider, previously named Nathaniel Singh, passed away at Lautoka Hospital on Sunday night following a severe head injury sustained during a match in Nadi on October 26. The boxing community and fans alike are mourning the loss of a promising talent.

Sports Minister Jese Saukuru attended the memorial and delivered a poignant eulogy, expressing that “Fiji has lost a golden talent” and emphasizing the inspiration Haider and his brothers provided to many young athletes. He reassured Haider’s family that the government stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.

Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy reminisced about Haider’s humility and dedication to his sport, acknowledging his hard work and commitment to becoming a successful professional boxer.

Boxing great Sonny Bill Williams, who watched Haider’s last fight, also reached out to express his condolences, offering personal support to the family.

After the viewing ceremony, Haider’s body was taken to his family residence in Laucala Bay for the burial ceremony, which will occur at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. Ubayd Haider leaves behind his wife Helen and their two young sons, a legacy of hope and inspiration for future generations of athletes.

This tragic loss serves as a reminder of the spirit and determination embodied by athletes, and as the community grieves, there is a collective hope that Haider’s legacy will inspire many to pursue their dreams fearlessly, keeping his memory alive in their hearts.
