The National Gymnasium in Suva was filled with mourners from various backgrounds today as they gathered to honor Ubayd Haider, a beloved Fijian Featherweight Boxer known as the “Prince of Fiji.” Haider passed away at Lautoka Hospital after sustaining serious head injuries during a boxing match on October 26.
Among those paying their respects was Sports Minister Jese Saukuru, who delivered a heartfelt eulogy reflecting on Haider’s talent and influence in the sport. Saukuru expressed the nation’s sorrow over the loss, stating, “Fiji has lost a golden talent and the country mourns the loss of the young boxer.” He emphasized Haider’s role in inspiring younger generations to pursue their dreams, referring to him as Fiji’s wonder boy.
Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy shared his personal memories of Haider, describing him as humble and dedicated. He acknowledged Haider’s hard work and commitment to boxing, expressing sadness over the young boxer’s untimely death while highlighting that his legacy will endure.
Boxing legend Sonny Bill Williams also expressed his condolences during the ceremony and vowed to visit Haider’s family to offer his support personally.
Following the memorial service, Haider’s body was taken to his family home in Laucala Bay, with plans for burial at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. He leaves behind his wife, Helen, and their two young sons.
