Hundreds gathered at the National Gymnasium in Suva today to honor the memory of Ubayd Haider, a talented Fijian Featherweight Boxer affectionately known as the ‘Prince of Fiji.’ Haider, born Nathaniel Singh, tragically passed away on Sunday night at Lautoka Hospital due to severe head injuries sustained during a match on October 26 in Nadi.

Sports Minister Jese Saukuru delivered an emotional eulogy, highlighting the profound loss of such a promising athlete. “Fiji has lost a golden talent, and the nation mourns this young boxer’s death,” he stated, emphasizing the inspiration Haider provided to younger generations aspiring to excel in sports.

Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, who was familiar with Haider, spoke fondly of him as a humble and hardworking individual. He expressed regret over the untimely loss, noting that Haider’s dedication and passion for boxing would have led him to great heights in the sport.

After the viewing ceremony at the gymnasium, Haider’s body was transported to his family home in Laucala Bay, with a burial planned at the Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. He is survived by his wife Helen and their two young sons.

In a moment filled with sorrow, it is important to reflect on Haider’s legacy and the impact he had on those around him. His story will continue to inspire future athletes in Fiji, showcasing the resilience and spirit that define the country’s sporting culture.
