Hundreds of family, friends, and notable figures gathered at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to honor the life of Ubayd Haider, a champion boxer in the super feather-weight and light-weight categories. The service was attended by prominent figures, including Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, and various members of the boxing community.

Haider, who previously fought under the name Nathan Singh, passed away late Sunday after spending over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital. His health had declined after he collapsed following his match against Australia-based fighter Runqi Zhou on October 26, which ended in a technical knockout.

Expressions of grief and condolences poured in from around the world. Mohammed Shameem, director of South Pacific Boxing Promotions, remembered Haider as a generous and strong individual whose contributions to boxing will be missed. Sebastian Singh, Haider’s older brother and also a boxer, acknowledged the overwhelming support his family received and highlighted Haider’s resilience, stating that he fought bravely despite being unwell leading up to the match.

Prominent personalities, including former athlete Sonny Bill Williams, also sent their condolences. Minister Saukuru reassured Haider’s family that the Ministry would facilitate a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding his passing.

Haider was laid to rest at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu, leaving behind a legacy of courage and dedication that resonates within the boxing community and beyond.

It is a poignant reminder of the impact sports figures have not only in their professional arena but also in their communities, uniting people through shared experiences and memories.

In memory of Ubayd Haider, let us commemorate his contributions to boxing and continue to support one another in the wake of his untimely passing.
