Hundreds of mourners converged at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday to pay tribute to Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s champion in both the super feather-weight and light-weight categories. Dignitaries present included Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf, and various members of the boxing community, along with family and friends.
Haider, who also went by Nathan Singh, sadly passed away late Sunday night after spending over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of Lautoka Aspen Hospital. His health deteriorated following a technical knockout (TKO) defeat to Runqi Zhou in an International Boxing Association (IBO) Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title match on October 26. Eyewitnesses reported that Haider collapsed while heading to the changing room after the fight.
Tributes poured in from around the world, with SPBP director Mohammed Shameem praising Haider as a kind and generous person whose contributions to boxing will be remembered. He emphasized that while they mourned his loss, they would also carry forward the valuable lessons he imparted.
Haider’s brother, Sebastian Singh, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support their family received during this difficult time. He revealed that Ubayd had been unwell days before the fight but still chose to go through with the match, indicating he may have felt pressured. Sebastian reflected on his brother’s impact, stating, “He had asked to be excused from the fight, he was manipulated,” and assured the family that Ubayd was loved by many.
Former sports star Sonny Bill Williams also sent condolences from Sydney, highlighting the significant loss Haider’s passing represents for Fijian boxing. Local trainer Mohammed Iliyas stood by the Singh family during Haider’s hospitalization and reinforced the need for justice, noting that a thorough investigation will be conducted by the ministry.
Haider was laid to rest at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu the same evening, marking a solemn yet significant farewell for a cherished member of the boxing community.
This heartfelt gathering showcases the unity and support within the Fijian community, especially in times of loss, emphasizing the lasting impact individuals can have regardless of their career paths. The ongoing intention to address the circumstances surrounding Haider’s death also reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of athletes in the future.
Overall, Ubayd Haider’s legacy as a fighter and a distinguished member of the boxing fraternity will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, serving as a reminder of the importance of pursuing both passion and well-being in sports.
